Business of the Week: Essential Melange

 Today we have selected Essential Melange as our Business of the Week. Here is an interview we conducted with the business owner about their background, the business and more!

The Official Black App: Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Sharae Schmitt: I am the head girls and head track & field coach at Jacksonville High. I have a bachelor’s degree in Health and Human Performance, a master’s degree in Health, Kinesiology, and Sport Studies, and currently pursuing a PhD in Leadership-Health and Human Performance. I am a natural hair specialist (who makes all natural hair products) who loves to educate myself on all things natural hair! I constantly go to research to help me better perfect my craft so that I can give my customers nothing less than the best!

The Official Black App: What made you want to start your business?

Sharae Schmitt: I eventually became impatient with standing in Walmart or other hair product stores for 2 ours reading the ingredients trying to find alcohol free hair products. My husband also got tired of waiting on me HAHA! So I decided to make my own “alcohol free” natural hair products. I was inspired by my oldest daughter and 2 nieces! I wanted them to have something healthy for their beautiful hair!

The Official Black App: When did you start your business?

Sharae Schmitt: I started my business in 2019 but I began experimenting in 2011.

The Official Black App: What motivates you to keep going?

Sharae Schmitt: My oldest daughter and nieces as well as my amazing customers extrinsically motivates me to keep persevering!

The Official Black App: Where do you see your business in 5 years?

Sharae Schmitt: I am hoping for my business to continue to succeed for years to come!

The Official Black App: Who has helped your business reach the point that it has?

Sharae Schmitt: My amazing customers (especially the loyal ones) have helped my business a great deal!!

The Official Black App: What other business people do you look to for inspiration?

Sharae Schmitt: I love to see other businesses similar to mine be successful! I am always an open book ready to learn to make my business better!

Where is the Fine?: Steelers mock Damar Hamlin

The recent antics displayed by some members of the Pittsburgh Steelers have been nothing short of disgraceful. In a show of complete disrespect and insensitivity, these players have mocked Damar Hamlin, a player who recently required CPR to save his life during a Monday Night Football game. It is completely unacceptable for any player, or group of players, to mock someone who has suffered a serious medical emergency. Not only is this behavior callous and heartless, it also sends a terrible message to fans and the rest of the league. The NFL must take swift and decisive action in response to this incident. The players involved must be fined, and the Steelers as a team must also be held accountable for their actions. This type of behavior has no place in professional sports, and the NFL must make it clear that it will not be tolerated. It is time for the great change to occur in the NFL.
