Business of the Week: Melanin Mic

Today we have selected Melanin Mic as our Business of the Week. Here is an interview we conducted with the business owner about their background, the business and more!

The Official Black App: Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Tanae Jordan: Dallas native. Current Houston, Texas resident. Graduated from The Texas Southern University with a Bachelors Degree in Business Management and Administration. Pro black!

The Official Black App: What made you want to start your business?

Tanae Jordan: I’ve always wanted to own my own platform to discuss topics within the black community and after talking with my mom she encouraged me to do it. I didn’t know what it was going to be, I just knew that I wanted the stories to not only be about us but told accurately and in a positive or informative way.

The Official Black App: When did you start your business?

Tanae Jordan: March of 2019. I had been brainstorming and procrastinating. When Covid hit, I had more time to actually dig into it and essentially had no excuses as to why I couldn’t get started.

The Official Black App: What motivates you to keep going

Tanae Jordan: Knowing that there’s a constant need for black people to be uplifted. As much negative news or information that gets fed to us through all the different outlets, it can become overwhelming just to be a black person. We not only strive to entertain but to educate and uplift those around us.

The Official Black App: Where do you see your business in 5 years?

Tanae Jordan: My app will be on every black person’s phone in the WORLD! I will take over *evil laugh*

The Official Black App: Who has helped your business reach the point that it has?

Tanae Jordan: My village. From my family to my friends. Strangers and supporters of my guests. Anyone who has ever engaged in a post or made a purchase. I do a lot of the creating and maintaining but it’s the people that keep it going.

The Official Black App: What other business people do you look to for inspiration?

Tanae Jordan: I love Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett, Debbie Allen, Shonda Rhimes, Issa Rae, Quinta Brunson, and Robert Townsend

The Official Black App: Thank you so much for taking the time to tell us more about your business and your story, where can people who are reading this article get in contact with you or follow you on social media?
